In this film still from artist Farah Al Qasimi’s performance How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love My Room, the artist explores the relationship between photography, surveillance, and identity. Al Qasimi’s wide-ranging subjects include falcon hospitals in Abu Dhabi, portraits of men in their homes, and the representation of Arab women in popular media. Her work is linked by an interest in identity-based surveillance and the power dynamics of portraiture.
The artist joins us on Saturday February 10th at the Museum for our Artist’s Eye series, where she responds to these themes in the special exhibition Ahmed Mater: Mecca Journeys.
